I was very skeptical about this photo and its value at first. I like the power plant with its rich smoke plumes feeding the clouds. The alps in the distance give depth to the image. The original however lacked punch.

For the final product, I started with two opposite processed versions of the raw file. One for the foreground up to the factory, which I made softer, low contrast and relatively lighter in tones.

The second one I processed for the clouds and alps. I increased clarity and contrast as much as possible so that the mountains and the cloud structure became visible. This also resulted in a darker look.

An overlayed B&W layer increased contrast even further. I masked that layer out in the lower part of the photo. Levels and a couple of curves layers were used for fine tuning of  lighting an colors in the image.

Finally, an orange tone was over imposed on the whole photo with varying strength through a mask for the final look.
